Audrey Grace's Story
Audrey Grace, my princess with Down syndrome.
I had a level 2 ultrasound done one June 15, 2011, which showed anomalies in my baby. I was 29 weeks I was very apphrensive when they asked about an AFP test??? My sister was with me during the procedure. The radiologist was the one asking questions. The sonographer and other staff knew me well since I had previously worked at the hospital. They saw double bubbles; suspected hydrocephaly. I also had a lot of amniotic fluid.
I saw a perinatalogist who did an amniocintesis on June 20th, 2011. He told me that my daughter most likely had trisomy 13 or 18, which he said were "incompatoble with life." I instantly said to him, I believe she has downs syndrome!! He said I could terminate or induce since he believed it was the other ones. She had duodenal atresia and suspected hydrocephalus and heart condtrion. He told me he did not think in ten yrs, that I could or would be able to raise a severely disabled child!! I told him I would not terminate under ANY circumstances, that God is allowed to be only one to end life. At this point, former ultrsounds showed my baby was a boy.
On June 22, 2011 at 12:17pm, the dr called after doing a FISH test. He was dumbfounded and could not believe she had Down Syndrome, otherwise known as trisomy 21!!! I told him termination was not an option, I saw him again on June 24th, 2011 with my sister present. We found he was a she, that her conditions were treatable, life threatening, but very treatable. My sister picked the name Audrey since that is my favorite actress, and I picked Grace for a middle name. Audrey means noble strength and Grace means God's grace.
I started leaking fluid in next two weeks and called the doctor and went to the hospital at once. On June 28th, I leaked enough that I was taken to the local hospital where it was determined that the amniotic sac had ruptured. I was sent to the regional hospital. I was at 1.5 cm and by the next morning was at 4. Audrey Grace was born at 7:37am weighing 3lbs 12 oz. She was 15 1/2 inches long. She was met by most of my family. She had 4mm hole in heart, non life threatening other mild heart issues. She had life saving stomach surgery at one day old and came through like trooper.
She had normal trouble feeding for preemie and a few set backs and stayed in NICU 7 weeks. She went home came back two days later for 4 days. She aspriatred from breast milk cereal added, which made us switch to formula.
She had 4 upper respiratory infections in 3 months which determined to be from more apiration and feeding tube was placed on January 6th, with many setbacks. She has a helmet for a flat spot, which is still a work in progress. She also has asthma. Audrey weighs 20lbs and now eats baby food.
She is the jewel of my family and very adorable!!!!!!!!!! She is pretty much at home because she catches many things. But she smiles and is infectious. She is not incomaptible with life!
